BJJ Lesson 21 – Roger Gracie vs Marcus Buchecha

A lot has happened since my last post. Not just BJJ stuff but work and life stuff sometimes don’t leave time for blogging. But I received some lovely feedback on my blog from my club and some of my content has been used on US based WHITE BELT BRAZILIAN JIU-JITSU. If you haven’t  been to WBBJJ yet I recommend you check it out for BJJ/MMA Gear, Apparel, News, Reviews, Interviews, Techniques and BJJ Humor.

So the big thing that happened recently in the world of BJJ was the Roger Gracie x Marcus Buchecha rematch.  The weekend of Saturday, July 22nd and Sunday, July 23rd, the best jiu-jitsu fighters in the world descended on Rio’s Olympic Park in Barra da Tijuca in the Zona Oeste (West Zone) of the city for the Gracie Pro 2017.

The event featured a heavyweight battle between the man most people consider the greatest heavyweight of all time, Roger Gracie, against the present-day heavyweight champion, Marcus “Buchecha” Almeida. Roger Gracie won by submission. Now, what makes this somewhat special is that a couple of weeks before, Roger Gracie was at my club and he taught us how to do a choke from the back. The very same technique that he used to submit Buchecha.

There are videos on YouTube that show the match and a few other videos that break down the techniques used by Roger. I don’t know whether these videos are legitimate recordings so I won’t include links. The original broadcast of the event was on flograppling.com.
