BJJ Lesson 14 – Weight Categories

Interesting rolling last night. There were a lot of people in a small space so we were split into two weight categories. Those over 80kgs on one side of the mat and everyone else on the other side.

This was great for me as I’m only 75kg and although BJJ is purposely designed to be effective against opponents of any size, it can be exhausting battling one 85kg blue belt after another. There are specific weight categories in competitive BJJ. The IBJJF has the rules laid out in lbs but a quick google and I found this table that has both lbs and kgs.

Not that you will be weighed every time you step on the mat but drilling and sparring with someone of similar weight and height gives you the opportunity to learn with someone that you can safely pick up, turn over, escape from under etc… without the frustration of either person being to light or too heavy. So maybe weigh yourself in your GI and figure out which side of the mat you should be on.
