We joined the great children’s storyteller Michael Morpurgo to hear about his brand new novel The Eagle in the Snow
After a short walk through Kew, we entered a large white marquee and we “Queued” (I didn’t do it, I could’ve, but I didn’t!) for a short while before entering the large seating area for the sold-out reading and meeting Michael Morpurgo
Bang on Kew (ok, fair enough, I’ll stop), Michael bursts into the marquee. An ebullient character, he immediately starts ribbing a South African about the Rugby. Within the following anecdotes and war stories, Michael eventually told us how his new book, a beautiful, moral thriller about the man who could have stopped World War II, came to be.
This is how 2 year olds queue.
“And what a story. The story of a young man, a young soldier in the trenches of World War I who, on the spur of the moment, had done what he thought was the right thing. It turned out to have been the worst mistake he ever could have made – a mistake he must put right before it is too late…”
Michael alters the tone, modulates and raises his voice which is an excellent ploy for keeping young minds engaged. This, he said, came from his days teaching year 6 and inventing stories to keep them listening until the home bell rang. He even managed a decent Irish accent when telling the story of RMS Lusitania.
There were some excellent questions from the children near the end of the event and although Michael could not sign his books, due to an injury, he did pose for photographs with the children.
After sitting still and quiet for the event we got outside into the gardens. Thanks to JCB Kids, my budding little worker, Joey, can now get dirty and roll around to his heart’s content without worrying about ruining his clothes. The latest range from JCB is designed to withstand the roughness and toughness of everyday play, whilst still having bold colourful designs, including Joey JCB from the “My First” JCB range which Joey obviously loves!
